Aaron Rodgers Says Retirement Still an Option, Dismisses Rumors of Contract Demands

Aaron Rodgers says he’s not rushing into any decisions about his football future — and retirement remains firmly on the table.

The 41-year-old quarterback opened up Thursday on The Pat McAfee Show, making his first public comments since January. Now a free agent after being released by the New York Jets, Rodgers said he’s taking his time and prioritizing personal matters before committing to a team.

“I’m open to anything and attached to nothing,” Rodgers said.

While he’s been linked to the Pittsburgh Steelers — even participating in an offseason throwing session with new Steelers wide receiver DK Metcalf — Rodgers confirmed he’s had serious conversations with head coach Mike Tomlin but hasn’t made any final decisions. He’s also reportedly been in contact with the New York Giants and Minnesota Vikings.

Rodgers said his focus has been on family and close friends going through difficult situations, along with his own relationship. “There are a couple people in my inner circle going through some really hard stuff,” he shared while appearing via video call from California. “That’s where my attention has been since the beginning of January.”

The four-time MVP also addressed speculation that he’s been stalling to secure a massive contract. He shut down those rumors, insisting that money is not a factor in his decision.

“I told every team I spoke to — I’ll play for $10 million,” Rodgers said. “It’s not about the money. I never once said I needed a multi-year deal or $30-40 million. That’s all just noise.”

Rodgers added that he’s been upfront in all team conversations and dismissed the idea that he’s “holding anyone hostage.”

“I don’t feel like I owe anybody a decision on their timeline,” he said. “This is my life, and things are different now.”

While he’s still leaving the door open to playing a 21st NFL season, Rodgers made it clear that he won’t rush the process.

“Retirement is still a possibility,” he said. “But my focus right now is — and will continue to be — on my personal life. The conversations with teams have been honest, and that’s how it’ll stay.”
